Simple Ingredients, Bursting with Fresh Flavor!

The beauty of this Tomato Mozzarella Salad lies in the quality and freshness of its few key components. Choosing the best ingredients will truly elevate your salad:

  • Cherry Tomatoes: These little gems are bursting with natural sweetness and vibrant acidity, making them the perfect bite-sized companion to creamy mozzarella. Look for firm, brightly colored tomatoes that feel heavy for their size. Grape tomatoes or even diced larger heirloom tomatoes can also be used.
  • Mozzarella Balls: We highly recommend using fresh mozzarella balls, often labeled as “bocconcini” (small) or “ciliegine” (cherry-sized). Their soft, milky texture and delicate flavor are essential. If you can only find larger fresh mozzarella, simply dice it into bite-sized pieces. Avoid pre-shredded mozzarella, as it won’t provide the same texture or fresh taste.
  • Fresh Basil: Absolutely crucial for that authentic, aromatic Italian flavor! Fresh basil leaves offer a peppery, sweet, and slightly minty note that dried basil simply cannot replicate. Use large, vibrant green leaves and roughly chop or tear them just before adding to the salad to maximize their fragrance.
  • Red Onion: A small amount of thinly sliced red onion adds a wonderful, piquant bite and a subtle crunch that balances the richness of the cheese and sweetness of the tomatoes. If you find red onion too strong, you can soak the slices in cold water for 10-15 minutes to mellow their flavor.
  • Homemade Balsamic Dressing: The true star that ties all these incredible flavors together. Our easy-to-make dressing features a blend of quality balsamic vinegar, pungent garlic, bright lemon, and a touch of Dijon mustard for emulsification and depth. Crafting it fresh ensures the most vibrant taste.

How to Make the Best Tomato Mozzarella Basil Salad

Crafting this incredible salad is straightforward. Follow these simple steps for a truly memorable dish:

Step 1: Salt the Tomatoes for Optimal Texture

Begin by gently placing your halved cherry tomatoes into a strainer or colander. Season them generously with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Allow them to sit for at least 15-20 minutes, preferably over a bowl to catch any drained liquid. This crucial step draws out excess moisture from the tomatoes, concentrating their flavor and preventing your salad from becoming watery.

Step 2: Infuse Olive Oil with Garlic and Lemon

While the tomatoes are draining, prepare your infused olive oil. Heat a small skillet over medium-low heat and add the olive oil. Once slightly warm and fragrant, add the minced garlic and fresh lemon rind strips. Gently cook for 2-3 minutes until the garlic just begins to turn light golden and the lemon rind releases its aromatic oils. Be careful not to burn the garlic. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the infused oil to cool slightly.

Step 3: Whisk Together the Homemade Balsamic Dressing

In a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the mayonnaise, balsamic vinegar, and Dijon mustard. Whisk these ingredients together until smooth. Once the infused olive oil has cooled, discard the lemon rind (it has served its purpose in imparting flavor) and pour the garlic-infused oil into the mayo mixture. Whisk vigorously until the dressing is well combined and emulsified. If the dressing appears too thick, add water, about ½ tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.

Step 4: Assemble and Serve Your Flavorful Salad

Once the tomatoes have adequately drained, discard the accumulated liquid. In a large salad bowl, combine the salted tomatoes, fresh mozzarella balls (halved if using larger ones), roughly chopped fresh basil leaves, and thinly sliced red onion. Pour the prepared homemade balsamic dressing over the ingredients. Gently toss everything together until each component is beautifully coated in the dressing. Finish with a generous grind of freshly cracked black pepper and serve immediately for the freshest taste.

Top Tips for a Perfect Mozzarella Tomato Salad

  • Salt the Tomatoes Thoroughly: This step is non-negotiable for a superior salad. Salting and draining not only prevents a watery salad but also intensifies the natural sweetness of the tomatoes. Don’t rush it!
  • Mind the Garlic & Lemon Rind: The lemon rind is solely for infusing flavor into the olive oil. Once its job is done, remove and discard it before mixing the dressing. For garlic, sauté it gently to soften its bite and bring out its sweetness; avoid burning.
  • Adjust Dressing Consistency: The perfect dressing consistency is key. If your dressing seems too thick, gradually add small amounts of water (half a tablespoon at a time) and whisk until it reaches a pourable, yet still rich, texture that will evenly coat the salad.
  • Consider Burrata for Extra Creaminess: If you’re a cheese lover looking for an extra luxurious touch, try swapping out the mozzarella balls for fresh burrata. Burrata offers an even creamier, richer interior that will melt into the dressing beautifully. Gently tear it over the salad just before serving.
  • Use Fresh, Quality Ingredients: This salad truly shines when made with the freshest possible ingredients. Seek out ripe, in-season tomatoes and vibrant basil for the best flavor.
  • Serve at Room Temperature: For the most pronounced flavors, allow the salad to sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before serving, especially if the mozzarella has been refrigerated. This lets the flavors meld and the cheese soften to its ideal texture.

Serving Suggestions and Variations

This versatile Tomato Mozzarella Salad can be enjoyed in countless ways:

  • As a Side Dish: It’s a fantastic accompaniment to grilled chicken, fish, steak, or any BBQ fare. Its refreshing qualities perfectly cut through richer main courses.
  • Light Lunch: Enjoy a generous portion on its own for a satisfying and healthy lunch.
  • Appetizer or Bruschetta Topping: Serve it in small bowls as an elegant appetizer, or spoon it over toasted baguette slices for a delicious bruschetta.
  • Pasta Salad Base: For a heartier meal, gently toss the salad with cooked and cooled pasta (like orzo or rotini) for a quick and flavorful Caprese pasta salad.
  • Add Protein: For a more substantial meal, add grilled shrimp, shredded chicken, or chickpeas.
  • Extra Veggies: Enhance the nutritional value and texture by adding diced cucumber, bell peppers, or olives.
  • Herb Variations: While basil is traditional, a sprinkle of fresh oregano or mint can offer an interesting twist.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

For the freshest experience, Tomato Mozzarella Salad is best enjoyed immediately after preparation. However, if you have leftovers or wish to prepare it slightly in advance:

Store leftover salad in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. The flavors may meld further, but the basil might wilt slightly, and the tomatoes could soften. For best results when making ahead, prepare the dressing and the salad components separately. Store the dressing in a sealed jar in the fridge, and keep the tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and onion in separate containers. Combine everything just before serving to maintain optimal freshness and texture.

  • ½ tablespoon water
  • 8 oz. cherry-sized mozzarella balls, halved
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
  • ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

  2. Heat a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add olive oil. Once the olive oil is slightly warm, add the minced garlic and lemon rind strips to the pan. Season with ¼ teaspoon of salt. 3. In a separate bowl, add the mayo, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, and ½ tablespoon of water. Whisk vigorously until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
  4. Discard the cooled lemon rind from the infused olive oil. Pour the garlic-infused olive oil into the mayo mixture. Whisk again until fully combined and emulsified.
Homemade balsamic dressing whisked in a bowl.
  5. To assemble the salad, discard any excess tomato liquid from the bowl beneath the colander. Transfer the drained tomatoes, mozzarella balls, fresh basil leaves, and thinly sliced red onion to a large salad bowl. Pour the prepared homemade balsamic dressing over these ingredients and gently toss until everything is thoroughly coated in the dressing.

  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Finish by topping with the remaining salt and freshly ground pepper, toss once more, and serve immediately to enjoy its peak freshness.

Tips & Notes

  • If the dressing is still too thick after whisking in the olive oil, feel free to add 1 teaspoon of water at a time until it reaches the desired coating consistency.
  • Feel free to use any kind of fresh mozzarella cheese. Whether it’s small ciliegine balls, bocconcini, or a large fresh ball, just ensure you cut it into bite-sized pieces for easy eating.
  • For an extra burst of flavor, try toasting the garlic lightly for a minute longer, but be careful not to burn it, as it can turn bitter.
  • Consider adding a splash of red wine vinegar along with the balsamic for an extra layer of tanginess in the dressing.
